Tips to Design a Modern Farmhouse-Style Home

Farmhouse-inspired home design has been around for a very long time. (Long before certain design influencers made it famous.) With a mix of stylish features like clapboard, board-and-batten sidings, multiple gables, battered entry columns, stone pedestals, timbers, clean trim lines, and warm front porches, this home style is easy to spot and even easier to love.

At EG Home, we offer several elevations in our Old Mystic Estates and Southbury Hills communities that perfectly capture this look. These homes embody a mix of contemporary and country, calm and cozy to create the perfect Modern Farmhouse-style home in Connecticut.

What Exactly Is “Modern Farmhouse”?

Essentially, it is a more sophisticated take on traditional country style. The perfect combination of contemporary minimalism mixed with a relaxed and rustic vibe creates a warm and comforting home and cohesive and curated style. The ideal modern farmhouse style should balance practicality and elegance. While nothing should be overly fragile, the space should maintain a certain sophistication.

Materials & Finishes

Think rustic, distressed, or natural. From weathered wood to exposed brickwork, distressed finishes instantly say “rustic farmhouse”. A brick wall. Exposed wood beams. For a kitchen think shaker-style cabinetry paired with cool metallic hardware, and pared-back natural wood furniture.

Neutral Color Palette.

Neutral color palettes are the base for the contemporary component of this style. Shades of whites, creams, and grays. For accent colors, you can choose anything, but in muted tones to achieve the nature-inspired feel that embodies modern farmhouse interior design. So light greens to deep blues, burgundy reds, burnt oranges, and mustard yellows!

Metals

Feel free to mix metals (gold, black, silver) in the same space. Brushed finishes work well for farmhouses since they match any other distressed surfaces. Gunmetal grays are a go-to in farmhouse interior design, adding a rustic feel as well as some elegance and contrast. Galvanized steel adds an extra rustic touch, while champagne bronze or rubbed oil bronze adds a modern feel.

Texture

Mixing different textures is one of farmhouse design’s hallmarks. For furniture, choose distressed surfaces, with scratches or knots. Go with materials such as leather, linen, and velvet. Then add textiles like natural fiber rugs, knitted blankets, and faux-fur pillows for depth and a timeless look.

Accessories & Decor

Juxtaposing modern with vintage is an easy way to achieve the modern farmhouse look – and add your own personality. Signs and graphics are also popular, as are vintage mirrors, country-inspired landscapes, and botanical prints. A few well-placed accessories should add sufficient farmhouse vibes, without adding clutter. Flea markets and antique stores are a great place to find authentic pieces that add just the right touch.
